From the M6 / Carlisle

  • Follow the A69 (signposted Hexham, Newcastle).
  • Entering Haydon Bridge, turn left onto “Church Street ” – B6319 (signposted Chollerford).
  • Cross the railway line and bear left onto “North Bank”.
  • After approximately ½ mile bear right onto “Tofts Bank” (signposted Grindon and Roman Wall).
  • After approximately ½ mile bear left onto “North Road” (signposted Grindon).
  • Continue straight on at cross roads with “Stanegate” (signposted Roman Wall).
  • On reaching the T-junction with the Military Road – B6318 turn right.
  • Carraw Bed and Breakfast is located on the right hand side after approx 2 miles.

From A1 ( Newcastle / Gateshead )

  • At junction of A1 / A69 follow the A69 (signposted Hexham).
  • At Styford Roundabout take the 3rd exit onto the A69 (signposted Jedburgh, Carlisle) along Corbidge Bypass.
  • At Bridge End Roundabout take the 2nd exit onto the A69 (signposted Carlisle).
  • Turn right onto the A6079.
  • Entering Acomb. Continue on A6079 for approximately 3 miles.
  • At crossroads with B6318 (signposted Chollerford), turn left.
  • Cross the River Tyne at Chollerford (Chesters Bridge).
  • At roundabout take the 1st exit onto the Military Road – B6318 (signposted Carlisle).
  • Carraw Bed and Breakfast is located on the left hand side after approx 4½ miles, just past The Temple of Mithras (Brocolitia), on your left.

By Bus

There is an excellent tourist bus service (the AD122) in high season, running between Newcastle and Carlisle, stopping at visitor attractions, towns and villages along the way. Alight at the Roman Site, The Temple of Mithras (Brocolitia), on the Military Road (B6318), Carraw Bed and Breakfast is a short walk away.

By train
